El, la, los, las are the definite articles in Spanish. As their name says it, they point to a known object. For example, if we
say el carro está malogrado, we know which car is broken down because el points to that fact. If we say la casa es grande, we know which house is big. La points to that fact. The definite article is equivalente to the in english. Definite articles are somehow opposite to indefinite articles. The latter point to objects which are not known to us. For isntance, un carro de la universidad está malogrado.  The indefinite article un tells us that among the many cars the university owns only one is broken down. We do not know which one. If we say un libro se cayó del estante, we do not know which book fell from the bookshelf, we just know one book fell. Compare to the sentence el libro se cayó del estante; in this case you know that your only one (precious, revered) book fell from the bookshelf. The indefinite articles are equivalente to the expression some in english; they also point to some specific characteristics of the noun. For example, la hermana de Carlos es una habladora. Una indicates the type of sister Carlos has.
